Background on Spelling Bee Literacy

Spelling Bee Literacy (Sp.LIT) was established in 2010 with the partnership of Spelling Bee of Canada. It aims to empower youth with literacy and literacy awareness by encouraging high school students to participate in Spelling Bees. In March 2012, Sp.LIT hosted the first-ever Multi-High School Spelling Bee Championship in Toronto with seven Toronto high schools participating in the event. This year, we are looking for more Student Ambassadors across Canada to run a Sp.LIT Spelling Bee at their high school. We are currently running the Canadian National High School Literacy Essay Contest and the Canadian Youth Literacy Network. We are also writing a play and making a film on literacy. We currently have all the necessary sponsorship and support from Spelling Bee of Canada. In addition to this, we have so far worked with TDSB officials, superintendents, trustees, principals, city councilors, SuperCouncil, teachers, and students all across Toronto. We hope to meet more new faces across Canada.

ABOUT US

Background on Literacy

Literacy is one of the most important tools anyone can have. Yet, 38% of young adults in Canada have low literacy skills (HRSDC and Statistics Canada, 2005). Without basic reading and writing skills, people are left without a voice. Literacy is one of the fundamental tools anyone can have in order to achieve success in life. Illiteracy is becoming an increasing issue in Canada and is one the biggest employment barrier to those with low educational attainment. There are a number of literacy organizations in Canada that are focused on combating low literacy skills in adults. Yet, there are only a few national literacy organizations that focus on the awareness for literacy among youth. By targeting youth on the issues of literacy, we can make them realize the value of it in this fast paced society. As literacy is used in our craft of life, everyone should be well equipped with the chances to have a voice and succeed.
